What is On-Die ECC？

On-Die ECC (Error Correction Code) is a feature in DDR5 memory that automatically detects and corrects single-bit errors within the memory chip itself. This enhances data integrity during read and write operations. While it improves reliability, especially in high-capacity and high-speed scenarios, it only protects data within the memory chip and does not safeguard data transmitted between the memory and CPU.

Simply Put:

Think of On-Die ECC like a spelling checker inside your notebook. While you write, it automatically fixes small spelling mistakes so your notes stay correct. Similarly, On-Die ECC fixes tiny errors inside the memory chip itself, keeping your data accurate. But just like the spelling checker can’t fix mistakes in someone else’s notes, it only protects the memory chip, not the data traveling to the CPU.
