As AI technology advances rapidly, more hardware devices are being equipped with AI capabilities, offering smarter and more seamless user experiences. In 2025, many are calling it the “Year of the AI PC,” as major computer brands release AI-enabled PCs that let users access generative AI features even without an internet connection. These AI PCs require powerful computing performance, and memory (DRAM) plays a key role. It stores and processes massive amounts of AI training data, acting as the computer’s essential “brain.” But just how crucial is memory for AI PCs? This article explains it clearly.

The Brain of AI PCs: Why Memory Matters for AI Computing

To understand the role of memory in AI PCs, it helps to first define what an AI PC is. Simply put, an AI PC is a computer with built-in AI computing capabilities. Its main difference from traditional computers is that it can perform AI computations locally, without relying on an internet connection or cloud services, to run generative AI functions. According to Microsoft, an AI PC must support Copilot AI functionality and meet hardware requirements of at least 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage.

Memory is vital for AI PCs because they use deep learning and natural language processing technologies. When running generative AI tasks, all computational data and model parameters are managed by the memory. Memory functions as the brain of the AI PC, storing essential data similar to how a CPU accesses memory to process results. As a result, both memory capacity and speed greatly influence system performance. High-speed, high-capacity memory can handle more complex data, support AI model training, and allow the computer to perform more demanding AI tasks efficiently.

Most new AI PCs today use DDR5 memory, with capacities reaching up to 64GB, far surpassing DDR4’s 16GB limit. DDR5 speeds can exceed 8000 MT/s, compared to DDR4’s 3200 MT/s, showing a clear performance advantage. As AI technology continues to advance, high-speed, high-capacity memory is becoming an essential specification. Whether in AI data centers, large servers, or AI-enhanced video production and gaming, the demand for memory continues to rise.
