SLC/MLC/TLC/QLC

  • # SSDs

What is SLC/MLC/TLC/QLC?

SLC (Single-Level Cell), MLC (Multi-Level Cell), TLC (Triple-Level Cell), and QLC (Quad-Level Cell) refer to the number of bits stored per cell in NAND flash memory, ranging from one to four bits respectively.

Simply Put:

Think of these as apartment buildings. SLC is like a single-story house, simple and quick to access. MLC is a two-story building, slightly more complex but holds more. TLC is a three-story complex, packing in more residents but taking longer to reach the top. QLC is a four-story structure, maximizing occupancy but with slower elevator rides. Each higher level increases capacity but sacrifices some speed and durability, just as taller buildings house more people but require more maintenance and time to navigate.
